“Women telling women stories” is the phrase that popped into my
head as I watched Orange is the New Black.  It was
funny, original (mostly), it had great writing, and great acting.
According to Netflix Orange is the New Black:

From the creator of “Weeds” comes a heartbreaking and hilarious new series set in a women’s prison. Piper Chapman’s wild past comes back to haunt her, resulting in her arrest and detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper trades her comfortable New York life for an orange prison jumpsuit and finds unexpected conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric group of inmates.

There were a few episodes
towards the end of the season that were blatantly poetic, deep, and chock full of metaphors.  The writing was off
the chain and swoon worthy.
Women need to tell their own stories… So I had to ask myself is that
isht real?  Who wrote Orange is the New Black? Who produced
it and who were screenwriters?
Is Orange is the New  Black real?  Sorta.  Its based on the year in the life of Piper Kerman.
Are
the episodes of Orange is the New Black written by women?
Wikipedia only listed the writers of four
episodes.  From what I could tell, two were written by men and two
were written by women.
It was produced by the lady who did Weeds.
Anyways….. That’s the quick rundown on Orange is the New
Black.
The show is based on the premise of a yuppie white chick going to jail.  Her whining about not being able to shop at Whole Foods gets old fast.  Unfortunately, no one is going to finance a show focusing around black, brown, and poor folks going to jail.  But those are the ones that steal the show.  When awards are being handed out for Orange is the New Black, and there will be some awards, I hope those actresses get their fair share.
